Web, Mobile or Desktop? How to Choose the Right Platform for Your Product

Every platform has trade-offs in reach, performance and cost. Here is the framework we use with clients to pick the right one — or the right combination.

Choosing a platform is one of the first — and most expensive — decisions in a product's life. Get it right and every sprint compounds. Get it wrong and you'll spend months porting instead of building.

Start with your users, not the technology

Ask three questions before anything else:

  1. Where are your users when they need you? At a desk, on the go, or both?
  2. How often will they use it? Daily tools earn a home-screen icon; occasional tools should be one link away.
  3. What does it need from the device? Camera, GPS, file system, offline mode, background processing?

When the web wins

The web is the default for good reason: zero install, instant updates and the widest reach. It's the right call for SaaS products, dashboards, marketplaces and anything that needs to be shared by link.

When to go mobile

Go mobile when your product lives in your users' pockets — field teams, consumers, anything with notifications, location or camera at its core. With React Native or Flutter a single codebase ships to both iOS and Android.

When desktop still matters

Desktop is back. Heavy editing tools, local-first apps, software that needs deep file-system or hardware access, and internal tools for teams that live on their computers all benefit from a native app. Electron and Tauri make cross-platform desktop practical.

The answer is often "web first, then…"

Most of our clients start with a web app to validate fast, then add a mobile or desktop client that shares the same API and design system. Planning for that from day one costs very little and saves a rewrite later.

The best platform is the one your users already have open.

If you're unsure, book a call — we'll map it out together.
